Much More Than a Typical Job Fair

A few years ago (OK, maybe more than just a few) I had the opportunity to attend quite a number of state conventions of the American Legion. My father, who served his country in World War II, has been a strong and active member of that outstanding organization in the nearly 70 years since.

Indianapolis is home to the American Legion headquarters and it is hosting its national convention in its home city later this month. In conjunction, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce will be bringing its Hiring Our Heroes program to the convention in what might be the ultimate perfect partnership.

The official name is the Hiring Our Heroes/Heroes to Hometowns’ Transition & Benefits Job Fair. It takes place at the Indiana Convention Center on August 25. The goal is to help veterans and military spouses find meaningful employment in the private sector.

The program, launched in March 2011, is making a difference (220 hiring fairs already with plans for 400 more, resulting in 10,000-plus jobs). But the needs are great: Unemployment for post-9/11 veterans under the age of 25 is at 29%; it’s 26% for military spouses.

There is no charge for employers or job seekers at the August 25 event. Register and learn more.
