CVC Celebrates Special Anniversary

Today marks 35 years of business storytelling for CVC Communications. The Fort Wayne-headquartered company has pioneered the application of communications technology, from video production to webinars and now custom, self-paced eLearning.

“Big birthdays often cause companies to reflect on milestones in their histories,” says CEO Marilyn Moran-Townsend. “We’ve chosen to instead focus on an interactive timeline filled with gratitude for our clients, our team, and the events that have made us stronger and more optimistic than ever about today and tomorrow.”

Moran-Townsend has served in a variety of volunteer leadership roles with the Indiana Chamber and other organization at all levels. She was named the 2001 Indiana Chamber Business Leader of the Year, among numerous honors.

Hylant: Maximizing Its Chamber Investment

It’s one of the perks that comes with sponsoring the Best Places to Work in Indiana Awards Dinner and program.

“It’s an environment unlike any other,” declares Hylant office manager Shannon Orr. “This was the second year we were the partner sponsor for the event. To be able to celebrate with clients and those on the list – that’s huge for us.”

A bit of background about the Best Places to Work in Indiana program: Honorees are announced each February, with rankings unveiled at the May awards dinner. Winners are recognized in four categories – small, medium, large and major – and selected based on employer reports and anonymous employee surveys.

Hylant, one of the largest privately-held insurance brokerage firms in the United States, was among the 100 companies that made the 2015 Best Places to Work in Indiana list. It ranked No. 3 in the large employer category.

Headquartered in Toledo, Ohio, Hylant has offices in six states. Indiana locations include Bloomington, Fort Wayne and Indianapolis.

“Rolling out the red carpet” for team members and clients through training programs – particularly those that focus on human resources and wellness – is another way Hylant partners with the Chamber.

“It’s a great opportunity to invite clients and prospects to participate in something they’re interested in,” Orr emphasizes, “and to have meaningful, thought-provoking conversations on topics that matter to them.”

Mike Packnett of Parkview Health (Fort Wayne) was honored as the Indiana Chamber’s 2015 Business Leader of the Year on Nov. 4. Packnett not only leads a successful hospital system, but works to enhance economic development in northeast Indiana.

Brotherhood Mutual Lives Up to Name by Helping Staffers’ Children

????????????????????????????????????????????For the upcoming May/June edition of BizVoice, I’ve written several stories about companies making the Best Places to Work in Indiana list.

In speaking with Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company in Fort Wayne — a company that has made the list many times, I learned an important tidbit about how the organization helps the families of its staffers. By employing every college age kid whose parent works for the company for a period of time (40 hours per week for six to 12 weeks, starting at a salary of $10 per hour), Brotherhood Mutual helps these students gain quite an advantage.

“They may start doing data entry or working on the grounds, but as they continue through their college careers and pick their majors, we try to place them (in a related job),” explains Mark Robison, chairman and president. “So if they’re a graphic artist, they’ll be in our communications department — and accounting majors will be in our finance department. Or for upper classmen, if we don’t have a good fit for them, we’ll work with them and place them (and sponsor their work at an outside organization).”

He adds that his son was able to gain two internships in social work through the program, including one in Los Angeles.

“This year, we had 48 students apply – and we have 360 employees, so that many students coming in for the summer really changes the dynamic of the workplace,” Robison relays. “There’s more energy and it’s more exciting. The cool part is parents are taking care of each other’s kids, so the camaraderie is incredible.”

The company also supports employees’ adoption efforts, among many other family-focused benefits offered. This type of attitude is likely one of the reasons Brotherhood Mutual will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2017 — a remarkable milestone indeed.

Linking Veterans With Jobs and More

sThe Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs will be visiting eight Hoosier communities over the next several weeks, holding Community Outreach events that will offer veterans, active duty members and their dependents opportunities to connect with services and prospective employers.

All events are free. Registration is requested for planning purposes. Each event will be held from 1:00-6:00 p.m. (local time) in the following communities:

  • October 27 – Valparaiso – Porter County Expo Center, 215 E. Division Road, Valparaiso. Register
  • October 28 – South Bend – Ivy Tech Community College, 220 Dean Johnson Blvd, South Bend. Register 
  • October 29 – Ft. Wayne – Ivy Tech Community College, Coliseum Campus, Room 1640, Fort Wayne. Register
  • November 6 – Terre Haute – Ivy Tech Community College Terre Haute Main Campus, The Community Room, 8000 South Education Drive, Terre Haute. Register
  • November 13 – Bloomington – Ivy Tech Community College, 200 Daniels Way, Hoosier Times Student Commons, Bloomington. Register

“Each event will provide information and assistance with VA benefits, claims processing, remission of fees and even what to do if someone wants to enroll or return to college,” said Deanna Pugh, Director of Veterans Employment and Education. “The Indiana State Police, Dish, NiSource, United States Postal Service, Kroger and Lowes will be among the companies and organizations looking to hire employees to work in these communities.

“We will also offer Dale Carnegie sessions to help veterans prepare for interviews. We’re very excited about connecting our resources to our veteran communities and helping link those who have served our country with the many services designed specifically to assist them.”

A new state law that took effect July, 1, 2014, allows for approximately 26,000 post-911 veterans to apply for assistance through the Military Family Relief Fund. This new law eliminates the three-year restriction on access to the fund, which provides grants that may be used for needs such as food, housing, utilities, medical services, transportation and other essential family expenses. The Military Family Relief Fund has a balance of more than $7 million and lifting the cap will ensure those funds are available to support Hoosier veterans and their families.

Since its establishment in 1945, the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) has remained focused on aiding and assisting “Hoosier” veterans, and qualified family members or survivors, who are eligible for benefits or advantages provided by Indiana and the U.S. government.

Energy Offer: Save and Get Paid

Energy consumers in the South Bend and Fort Wayne regions can learn more about a new demand response program at upcoming presentations.

Participating organizations can receive payments year-round in exchange for agreeing to reduce energy use during times of high demand. The details will be explained during one-hour breakfast meetings on August 27 and 28.

Chambers Assisting with Rep. Todd Young Tax Reform Tour

The Indiana Chamber is delighted to partner once again with Rep. Todd Young as he tours the state, working with local chambers to communicate the need for tax reform. A release from his office has dates and more information:

As the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee prepare to roll out reforms to the U.S. tax code, Ways and Means Committee member and Indiana Congressman Todd Young (IN-9) announced on Friday that he will embark on a statewide tour to talk about proposed changes with local businesses. The events are being hosted by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce and local Chambers of Commerce in each area, and other members of the Indiana Congressional delegation will be on hand at some of the events.
 
“We haven’t fundamentally overhauled our tax system in a quarter of a century, and since the 1986 reforms our code has been larded up with provisions that only benefit narrow interests,” said Young. “The net effect is a tax code that is confusing, complex and difficult for individuals and small businesses to comply with. As we try to spur our economy, making the code simpler, fairer and flatter is key.”
 
While the events will be closed to the press to promote candid discussions, a media availability will be held at 1 p.m. local time after each roundtable. Local media will have the chance to talk with Rep. Young, other members of the delegation, and local businesses about what was discussed.

Headquartered in Fort Wayne, Do It Best Corp. employs over 1,400 full-time staffers and can boast over 4,000 member locations throughout the United States and 53 countries. The lumber/hardware/building materials distributor's web site explains why it was founded back in 1945:

Do it Best Corp., formerly known as Hardware Wholesalers, Inc. (HWI), began as the vision of Arnold Gerberding. Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1900, Gerberding worked in the hardware business from the time he graduated from high school in 1919. Working as a buyer, he faced many challenges and frustrations getting products at good prices to compete with the popular and rapidly growing catalog and retail chains like Sears, Roebuck and Co. and Montgomery Ward, Inc.

Study Connection
In 1989, Do it Best Corp. president emeritus Don Wolf founded the Study Connection program, a volunteer-based effort that provides tutoring and mentoring for young people in need. This nationally acclaimed program is now being duplicated in communities across America. For one hour each week during the school year, Do it Best Corp. staff volunteers meet one-on-one with local elementary school students identified by their teachers as needing extra assistance. Each year, teachers and volunteers nominate outstanding student participants for Don Wolf awards. Do it Best Corp. has long supported the growth and development of this program, and offers its Fort Wayne facility for on-site education.

Start! Heart Walk
The Start! Heart Walk is a non-competitive walking event to benefit the American Heart Association. Participants in local walks around the country raise funds for heart disease and stroke research and education; 150 Do it Best Corp. staff, along with family members and friends, participate each year, raising tens of thousands of dollars in pledges.

Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a team event that raises money for the American Cancer Society’s research and education efforts. Do it Best Corp. employees from both corporate headquarters and the retail service centers have participated in local Relay for Life events for many years.

Habitat for Humanity
In 2004, Do it Best Corp. selected Habitat for Humanity as its cause of choice. Habitat’s mission is to eliminate substandard housing around the world by providing decent, affordable shelter for those in need.

Midwest Telecom Expo Coming to Fort Wayne October 9-11

If you have an interest in emerging technologies, you may want to make a trip up to Fort Wayne in October. The Indiana Telecommunications Association is hosting the Midwest Telecom Expo. Here is some info from a press release: 

The Midwest Telecom Expo is excited to announce it will be diving into its next 30 years of service by bringing innovative technology from exhibitor booths and a broad discussion on topics impacting fiber optic technology, broadband, wireless services, enterprise business networking, video services and home networks.  The Midwest Telecom Expo will be held October 9-11, at the Grand Wayne Convention Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and will host over 600 communication professionals and 100 exhibits designed to provide a “hands on” opportunity for attendees to see new technology and discuss its capabilities.  

“This showcase provides attendees in the communications business with all the latest high tech equipment and how it can be used to grow services in a competitive economy,” said Darren Dierbeck, Vantage Point Solutions, VP of Customer Relations and Chairman of The Midwest Telecom Expo. “Whether it’s broadband, wireless or networking, the Expo gives telecom companies a place to evaluate which equipment best suits their needs.”

Highlights of this year’s agenda will include keynote speaker, Michael Golob, SVP-Engineering and Technology at FRONTIER and a leading authority in networking communications technology. He will discuss how to take the benefits of broadband services to America’s rural areas.  Golob is responsible for integrating the new service areas acquired in 2010 from Verizon into FRONTIER’S national network and also works to expand the broadband capacity of the company’s network. The second keynote speaker will be David Seda, Vice President of Field Marketing for CALIX. Seda is a technology expert with the distinction of working as an executive at world renowned technology company, APPLE for 10 years when the company was bringing some of its most innovative products to market.  Seda will be discussing the growth of wireless technology and how companies may serve customers with more services by utilizing new fixed wireless options.

Other topics that will be covered include Disaster Recovery, Growing Services from Data Networks and Strategic Planning.

In addition to its educational programming and exhibit hall, The Midwest Telecom Expo will feature exciting evening receptions and a golf outing (weather permitting) to provide a casual atmosphere for networking. Additionally, FRONTIER is helping sponsor a National Guard Indy Car revealing the latest in racing technology to attendees while they view exhibits.

Lunch with Brinegar: The Tour Continues

Indiana Chamber President Kevin Brinegar is once again hitting the road as part of the statewide Lunch with Brinegar series. He will travel across the state to present information to members about major policy issues and the 2012 election. You will also learn more about Chamber offerings to ensure you are receiving the full return on your investment.

The tour kicked off May 16 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with subsequent stops in Fort Wayne and Valparaiso. Joining Brinegar is Tim Brewer, Chamber vice president of membership, with details on products and services available to you as members of the state’s largest broad-based business association.
